Microsoft’s Major Nelson has posted a list of the top 20 most played Xbox 360 games of 2009. The list is based upon the number of unique users playing a game that are connected to Xbox LIVE rather than strictly online play. This explains why non-online games like Fallout 3 made the list.
Most of the top 20 is filled with the usual suspects, people do love their shooters, but there are a few surprises. I mean who knew Guitar Hero III is still getting a lot of play these days? And the success of Fable II Episode 1, and the demos for Halo Wars and UFC show people like to try a game before they buy.
I’m also a little surprised at what isn’t on the list. No Rock Band of any kind in the top 20. With weekly song releases you’d think that would cause people keep the game in their system.
Also no Madden? Really? Wow, I guess people have cooled on Madden more that I thought.
